The Joy of Sustainability #001 – Finding Joy in Living Sustainably

Recently, I’ve been fighting with myself and thinking a lot about what I want this blog to be – Asking myself questions like what should readers expect when they visit my blog? What kind of content would resonate best with my target audience? And with me? Who should my target audience be? What suits my writing style and life? High-level concepts in sustainability? My own personal adventures in sustainable living? How-to guides on living sustainably? Discussing current events and how they relate to sustainability? Reporting and spreading the word on other positive things happening in the sustainability world?

I love nature! The joy I get from it and being able to share that joy with readers is what I want to focus on. Preserving nature for my kids (and everyone else’s) is a huge motivation for me to live sustainably.

Sustainability is a broad topic – it literally encompasses everything in the whole world, and there’s so much to cover. I thought about how it’s time that I start to boil my message down a bit; to focus in on what I think is most impactful and important in the world of sustainability. But I can’t do that if I keep blogging like I have – just writing about whatever element of sustainability happens to be in my head at the time. My blog has always been kind of a mish-mosh of sustainability-related thoughts, with no particular focus. The only thing that I can contribute that no one else can is my own personal experiences and feelings. So I’ve decided I’m going to try an experiment with a focused message: The Joy of Sustainability. (working title, I may have to change it up later)

This blog is going to get personal.

The Joy of Sustainability

Every week, I’m going to write a post that is about some aspect of joy that I find in living sustainably – In essence, sustainable actions that make me feel that little flutter of joy every time I do them or think about them, and make me want to continue doing them. I hope that it will make my blog a little more personal and more enjoyable for me to write and for you to read!

From now on, I hope to include more of my own photos, not just ones sourced from Google. Kind of awkward, but I need to get more personal. So here’s me right now as I write this post.

Now I want to be clear from the start: these things are not meant to be a list of things you must do to live a sustainable life, nor are they a list of the most impactful things you can do. There are plenty of those out there already (if that’s what you’re looking for, here’s a good one, or this, or this). What I’m posting will simply be the things that make ME feel joy, while also making the planet a slightly better place.

That said, I would also be remiss not to recommend these actions – I submit to you that most actions that make your life more sustainable, while they may be seemingly difficult/challenging/inconvenient at first, they also tend to make your life happier, healthier, more fulfilling, money saving, and more connected to family, friends and community! So if you elect to give some of these actions a try, I’d bet that you’ll thank me later!

This is something I’m genuinely excited for. I’m looking forward to opening up and sharing more with you all, and I hope you’ll all enjoy my blog a bit more for being a little peephole into my increasingly-sustainable life. I hope also that more of you will choose to comment or send me a message about my posts as well, as sustainability only leads us to actual sustainability when we have enough people taking these actions together! Be part of a growing community with me and get in touch!

Thanks for reading!
