Subscribing to Stop Climate Change

Climate change is a human, global problem that is hurting every living thing on this planet.
If you’re here reading this blog, I can assume we agree on that point.
If you’re here reading this blog, I hope that you, like me, are also trying to do whatever you can to try to stop climate change: maybe you avoid driving a car or eat plant-based, maybe you write letters to your representatives, or maybe you work in an industry actively working to bring down the human impact on climate.
There are tons of things we have to do to help
- Our individual actions shape culture and moral values of society, so individual actions matter.
- We have to participate in pressuring governments and businesses to do better for climate, since they are the bulk of emissions.
- We have to shift whatever industry we work in, because at some point, every company in the world needs to get as close to net-zero emissions as possible.
As much as possible, I try to do all of the above: I bike to work, I pick up trash, I eat plant-based as much as possible, I write letters to representatives and corporations, I vote, I try to have an impact at my job. It seems like a lot, but to me, it’s all just become normal over time; small changes over long periods of time make for big impacts!
However, I understand that no matter how much I do, my individual carbon footprint has a very small impact on the world as a whole. Even so, understanding my own life and how it impacts the environment is not only fun and interesting, but also feels like something within my power; it’s something that I can control right now, as opposed to the emissions that are pumped into the air by the oil industry, which I have no direct control over.
I do this through changing my behavior in my everyday life, and I try to get my carbon footprint as low as possible. But again, ultimately, my actions have a very small impact on the actual state of the world, and I will never be able to truly get my carbon footprint to zero.
Subscribing to Fighting Climate Change
Recently, I discovered a website that helps me in a couple of ways. It’s called Wren.co, and they have a pretty cool service:
- It helps calculate your carbon footprint and see how you’re doing compared to the rest of the human population. There are a bunch of free online calculators that will do this for you, all to slightly different results; nothing special. But the other service Wren provides is one I found interesting:
- It offers a subscription service to help offset your remaining carbon footprint.
You’ve probably already heard of carbon offsets, usually it means you pay to have some trees planted, or some carbon pulled from the atmosphere to balance some amount of carbon you emitted. Maybe a flight you took recently. In the case of Wren.co, it does indeed do some tree planting, but it also focuses on other aspects of climate justice as well, which I found to be refreshing and unique. Projects like helping refugees by providing them with clean cooking fuel, tools for Amazonians to protect the rainforest, or supporting mineral weathering projects to speed up Earth’s carbon cycle to sequester more carbon from the air.
Is Wren.co trustworthy?
As I learned about it, I really felt like Wren.co is trying to do something good and wanted to support them. But how trustworthy are they? There have been numerous reports of carbon offsetting projects that have turned out to be scams. I’ve done some digging online to see how legit this site is, and it seems to be relatively well verified that they do very good, transparent work. They do what we should expect out of a service like this: offer us transparancy and a way to contribute our money to climate solutions. Every receipt, dollar they receive, and report they produce is available for the entire public to scrutinize.
I promise, they’re not paying me to say this.
Just for some transparancy of my own, I haven’t received anything from Wren.co to write this post. I genuinely just feel like this is a really cool website with a ton of potential, and I’m making it a goal of mine to become a subscriber. I couldn’t thing of a better thing to do with $20 a month.
I hope you take a moment to go check out www.Wren.co and calculate your own carbon footprint! Then, if you feel like you could spare a few bucks every month (it’s like 3 Starbucks coffee’s per month to subscribe) to help the climate crisis, then I’d recommend subscribing too.
