A Different Perspective

In a previous post, I talked about how getting a dog brought unexpected positive things to my life, despite thinking it was going to be mostly a nuisance to my busy life.

One of those things is that I ended up getting out of the house and exploring the neighborhood a lot more. It meant exploring the hills and forest near my home, which I now trek regularly with my dog. Often getting off the beaten path and wandering through forest that I’m pretty sure very few people trek.

Getting off the beaten path with Manoa.

This often leads me to thoughts I don’t think I would otherwise have. Different views and opinions occur to me that otherwise wouldn’t have. These walks through nature sometimes pull me out of a busy, city-focused life and give me a new perspective. Sometimes quite literally.

A view from outside of humanity.

Looking at humanity from the outside

When I look at human society from outside, from nature’s perspective, I realize how disconnected we’ve become from the world we live on. Our cities are concrete deserts, with little-to-no green sparsely scattered throughout an otherwise lifeless landscape. When compared to the mountains that I visit that are teeming with life like plants, insects, and wild animals, our cities are human monocultures. Maybe some pigeons, rats, and cockroaches excepted.

We have not learned how to live with nature. We’ve entirely separated ourselves from it.

And I think everyone, even if they don’t realize it consciously, longs for nature. You will notice it every time you go out into nature: when you go hiking, when you go to the beach, when you have a picnic in the park. That feeling of joy, freedom, and clarity. We love nature on a fundamental, instinctual level. We are animals that are supposed to have a deep connection to the world around us. And when we live in these concrete cities, we lose the benefits of that connection. We are still connected, but just in the sense that our waste is flowing out into the environment.

It’s time for us to find nature again. It’s time to reconnect to the natural world that our instinctive minds are calling for. It’s time for humanity to find balance. It’s time to Live ECO.
